COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY
RAM'S HORN DINING CENTER

New Academic Village
Fort Collins, Colorado

In an effort to get students out of their dorm rooms and encourage socialization, CSU's New Academic Village (NAV) has combined living and learning into a single intimate community. The dining commons includes a sports grill, a la carte dining and the Ram's Horn Dining Center that will primarily serve students with meal plans. The NAV will eventually support six residence halls as part of a campus wide expansion to house a student population expected to grow by 5,000 in the next few years.

RND's interior design studio has created a fun, sophisticated dining space in the ground level sports grill with LCD televisions, sports memorabilia and even a kayak! The 8 food venues on the second floor were designed with a focus on flexibility. Each has the ability to support new menu items as trends shift.

Sustainablity was also a key factor to the design. Most notable is a pulper that uses water to compact food waste and then recirculates the water to conserve it. This process will save 125,000 gallons of water a month and will divert 70% of the waste from landfills. The compacted by-product will become a resource that goes to a local compost farm. The result has been an overwhelming positive response from students and a positive impact on the environment.
